Yesterday was the Pack 3 Cub Scouts Camp-Out at Camp Illinek (out by Lake Springfield). Since this weekend was Rob's turn for his "guys" weekend up north, good 'ole mom got to go camping with Adam. We ended up having a really good time. I was glad there were some other moms I knew to talk to, since the boys took off on several hikes and participated in activities such as a scavenger hunt and capture the flag. There were probably 5 or 6 dens that camped with us and probably around 25-30 tents set up. After a traditional camping dinner of hot dogs, chips, potato salad and cookies, the pack met up with a Boy Scouts den that was also camping that night. We gathered at the Fire Bowl (tribal council I started calling it!) to watch some skits put on by each den. One thing we saw which kind of special was how they "retire" an American flag....by burning it. Adam didn't quite understand why they were burning the flag, so I had to explain to him later that it was out of respect for a old flag that had been flying for a long time and the colors were faded and was starting to tear. It was a very somber moment and a good chance to reflect on how lucky we are to live in America. After that it was time for smores and another flashlight hike through the wood (accompanied by one of the Dad's!) Adam was ready for bed at 9:30, so we snuggled up in our cozy little tent and crashed for the night. Emily got to spend the day/night with Grandma, so Adam and I really enjoyed our quality time together.
